St Mary's is the parish church of Comberton, a village five miles west of Cambridge. We hope that you enjoy reading about the life of the church which has been at the heart of the community since the 12th century.
St Mary's from The Causeway
A view of the church from the North... showing the new porch extension
The Trinity tree
In the churchyard stand 3 large Sycamores...they are majestic... Often around Trinity Sunday they are used to illustrate the character of God the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit...3 tree trunks...1 tree canopy...
The view from the tower
The tower has been restored a few times and is home to the 4 bells and a heritage display. In 2012 it was used to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee with the lighting of the beacon to the top of the tower.
Our barn at the end of the lane...this is where our activities for children take place. With limited space inside the church building and extending was not really an option, we decided to build a new area...The Barn!
Candles - a focus for our prayers
A reminder that Jesus is the light of the world... a good focus for our prayers... Also an opprotunity to reflect and ponder...
Prayer stations in the chancel
The chancel area of the church is often used for quiet creative prayer. During Lent it is also used for the evening Compline service
A well dedication
We work with Samaritans Projects to support a church in Northern India. We have fund raised to supply a water pump and a supply of Hindi Bibles. The church faces everyday challenges because of their faith. Here is the dedication of of the new pump... they use it as an opportunity to thank God and lead others to Him.
Our twinned church in India cooking for a shared lunch... that's a very large pan of curry!
With God nothing is impossible
This interesting piece of graffiti was spotted in a neighbouring village... but serves as a reminder that nothing is indeed impossible for God!...So dream big dreams....
The annual churches together service
Every year the churches in the deanery and others join together at Comberton Leisure. It's a great opportunity to worship, pray and meet with other churches...
The art and craft exhibition
St Mary's hosts an Art and Craft exhibition in November. Local artists display their paintings and crafts. Teas/Coffees are served and there is the opprotunity for people to pray/reflect in the chancel area. It is well supported by the village.
Making good use of the church building
The building becomes and art gallery with painitings and crafts for sale...Always a highlight of the year...the Art and Craft Exhibition is held over 3 days...
Usually for Christ the King Sunday we come together to worship with other churches from the area.
Meridian Primary Whole School Carol Service
On the very last day of the autumn term the whole school walk to St Mary's for their Carol service. It is a lovely sight as young pupils are 'escorted' by older pupils. The church is packed and the singing is beautiful... often there is lively instrument playing...
Sacred Space services
A creative, reflective service usually held 4 times a year in Dry Drayton church
Christmas crib services
Every year we hold a Crib service on Christmas Eve in the afternoon. This is a great time for familes to focus on the real meaning of Christmas.
All bells ring for the 2012 Olympics
In 2012 we took part in the Cultural Festival to celebate the London Olympics. Bells up and down the country and commonwealth rang out at 12 minutes past 8 in the morning. After bell ringing we celebrated with bacon butties!
There are lots of ways people can be involved in the life of the church. Attending on a Sunday is just one example. There are fortnightly homegroups and a monthly Worship singing group. There are fund raising/community activities such as coffee mornings, sales and the church fete. There are also opportunities for people to support the church and the activities financially. This can be done online if that is easier.
A marriage service, wherever it is held, is a public declaration of love and commitment to your partner. In a church ceremony, you make that commitment in the presence of God, and we will pray for God’s blessing upon you. We are delighted to welcome couples who are seeking a church wedding. Everybody who lives in St Mary’s parish, and many other people who have a link with the parish, has a right to be married at St Mary’s.
